As a traditional DJ, John Turci-Escobar leans into the representative orchestras of the Golden Age while also weaving in contemporary orquestas milongueras. Over the course of the milonga, he responds to the energy on the dance floor and leads dancers through the wide range of emotions that the rich tango repertoire offers. John has DJ’d and lectured on tango music since 2009 nationally and internationally.

John holds a Ph.D. in music theory from Yale University and is currently a professor in the Butler School of Music at The University of Texas at Austin. He writes and lectures on tango music, dance and culture. You can listen to John on “Up close with tango,” an episode of The Forum aired by the BBC World Service.  You can read his article on Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges and his views on tango.
